PTO. Prison Time Off. Your temporary authorized release, granted at the company's discretion, revocable if staffing gets tight, and something you'll be quietly guilted about using even though it's part of your actual compensation.

Here's what nobody tells you when you start: PTO isn't a gift. It's not extra. It's already yours, priced into the job before you ever accepted it. Treating it like a favor they're doing you is the first trick.

The second trick is timing. First come, first served. Once calendars fill up around you, your time off becomes a negotiation instead of a decision.
