Full Definition

Officially, a plan for improvement. Sometimes genuinely that. Sometimes the paper trail being built in case your employment ends.

The document itself won't necessarily tell you which one you're in. What you're actually looking at is a piece of formal documentation, on a clock, with your name on it. What that documentation is for becomes clearer through what happens next.

Signs You're Living It

The goals showed up with no real conversation before them, like the concern was new even though it wasn't.
The timeline is short enough that "improvement" and "impossible" start to look the same from where you're standing.
HR seems more involved in documenting the plan than anyone is in helping you complete it.
Or: the goals are specific, the timeline is workable, and someone is actually showing up to help you hit them. Worth noticing which version you're actually in before you assume the worst.

Survival Move

Write your own account of every conversation, the same day, before memory gets involved. Ask directly what happens if you hit every goal, and pay attention to how confidently that question gets answered. Keep looking regardless, even if this one turns out to be the real thing, because "I have options" is the only leverage you get to keep either way.
