If they can have selective amnesia about what they promised you, you're allowed selective competence about what you're capable of.

The rule is simple. Be genuinely excellent at your actual job. Be confusingly, consistently average at everything adjacent to it. The moment you prove you can help with something outside your role, you own that thing forever, unpaid, unrecognized, and unable to hand it back.

This isn't laziness. It's a direct response to how the system actually rewards competence: with more work, not more money. The most capable person in the room doesn't get promoted for being capable. They get quietly taxed for it, over and over, until they either burn out or learn this rule.

Signs You're Living It

You've said "I'm actually not that familiar with that" about something you could do in your sleep.
You've watched a less capable coworker get handed less work purely because nobody trusts them with more.
You've felt the specific exhaustion of being too good at something you never wanted to own.

Survival Move

Pick your one or two lanes and be undeniable in them. Everywhere else, let your competence stay quietly unconfirmed.
